The Ahntornus System was fortified during the War for Private Space and was undefeated even up until hostilities were ended. While a thoroughly uninhabitable system, its tactical significance comes from its cosmic occupants. The outer three planets have relatively fast and staggered orbits, forcing invading fleets to plan attacks based on avoiding unintentional encounters. Second, the massive orbital castle station of Ahntor provided torpedo defense, preventing fleets from establishing an orbit around the fortress world. This is evident from the field of debris. Fleets also found it impractical to approach Ahntor from a sunward direction due to the intense radiation field. Finally, the Ahntor garrison was kept deep beneath the surface, under a toxic atmosphere and hostile ecosystem.
This fortress world was founded on the principle that the environment was already so hostile to invaders, that whoever was residing there would be next to invincible.
The natural defenses come in several layers. The first is the single moon. In addition to orbital defense installations, the moon's orbit brings it close enough to Ahntor to cause a tidal rise of the caustic atmosphere, often high enough to effect spacecraft in low orbit. The second layer is the planet's atmosphere itself. In addition to its acidic properties, it is also easily ionized by frequent electrical storms, causing unpredictable and widespread damage to both armored and shielded craft. If invaders reach the surface, they must contend with several species of hostile wildlife, including large predators with enormous leaps, who drag unwary people into the dense foliage of the canyons, as well as the swarms of small insects, and their parasitic cousins capable of flight. Even the plant life is hazardous. The large fungal forests that cover most of the surface propel spores that accumulate in exposed mechanics and electronics, causing them to malfunction.
The defensive installations on Ahntor are buried deep in the crust, and ships may land or leave only through large chimneys that are exposed only during atmospheric low-tide.
