Surface cars are lightweight motor vehicles designed to operate on planet surfaces and carry up four people. Unlike their larger counter-parts the Surface Rover and the Surface Transport, they are not pressurized, nor particularly well-protected from hazardous environments. However, their smaller frame, omni-directional wheels, and excellent suspension makes for a faster and more maneuverable automobile. Even so, some military variants are available which include armor plating, and a roof-mounted turret.

Many surface cars are designed as luxury vehicles with style and comfort in mind. While these are often fast, maneuverable, and expensive, they are not designed to operate outside of well-maintained urban motorways, and are easily damaged.
Surface cars designed for off-road use are often called buggies thanks to their insectoid appearance. They have a covered cabin that can protect from weather, a strong frame that can withstand impacts, and a powerful suspension system. Additionally, they have hardpoints for mounting weapons or tools.
A vast majority of surface cars are inexpertly constructed from from salvaged parts. These are often called junkers. However being designed out of necessity, they are still effective as vehicles, and adaptable for a variety of purposes. Since they lack the expensive or technical features of more advanced surface cars, they are also easy to manufacture and maintain.
